The Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill

The Silver Slipper Stakes is one of Australia’s premier Group 2 horse races. An annual event, the Silver Slipper Stakes takes place at one of Australia’s most distinguished racecourses – Rosehill Gardens – as part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The Silver Slipper Stakes 2012 will be run at Rosehill Racecourse on the 26th of February 2012.

Run over a sprint distance of 1100m , the Silver Slipper Stakes is open to two-year-olds and is a set weights event. Colts and geldings carry 56.5kg and fillies are allocated 54.5kg.

It is a highly anticipated event as it is the first race of the autumn in Sydney solely for two-year-olds. Despite no other Sydney races suitable as a preparatory race for the Silver Slipper, many of the elite and promising runners in the event will have come via the Blue Diamond Stakes at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse the previous week.

History

The Silver Slipper Stakes inaugurated in 1963 and was first won by Eskimo Prince. It has been run over its current distance of 1100m since 1984 and gained its prestigious Group 2 status in 1979.

Rosehill Racecourse

Rosehill Racecourse is located in Sydney, Australia. It is one of Australia’s premier race tracks – a legendary icon in its own right. Managed by the Sydney Turf Club, Rosehill Racecourse offers the punters a number of high-status, high-quality races. Established in 1943, the Sydney Turf Club was created after the Sydney Turf Club Act was passed. Holding over sixty races each year and also managing another famous Australian racecourse – Canterbury Park – the Sydney Turf Club is a power to behold.

Rosehill’s circumference is 2048 metres. It has a straight of 408 metres. Famous for its box shape and smooth sweeping bends, the track offers back runners opportunities to come home and win in the lengthy straight.

In terms of the Silver Slipper Stakes and its length of 1100 metres, Rosehill offers runners a start from inside the main course. Horses are required to race about three hundred metres prior to hitting the main track. After that, horses hit a double turn. Those horses that are lucky enough to have an inside barrier have a distinct advantage.
