2010 Silver Slipper Stakes Preview

February 12th, 2010

Sydney’s scenic Rosehill Gardens racecourse will come alive on Saturday February 27 when the Sydney Turf Club hosts the prestigious Silver Slipper Day.

Three terrific group races will be run at the meeting including the $200 000 Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) where a collection of the country’s best up-and-coming two-year-olds will compete.

The Silver Slipper Stakes is sure to generate a lot of attention and will be a hot betting market as the winner is exempt from ballot for the $3.5million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes on April 3.

Many punters will be keen to see which two-year-olds perform well in the Silver Slipper as an indication for their Golden Slipper Stakes bets.

The other black type races scheduled to run on Silver Slipper Day are the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes and the Group 3 Millie Fox Quality Stakes.

A likely starter for the Silver Slipper is the classy filly Solar Charged. Solar Charged, trained by John O’Shea, has already been installed as the second favourite for the Golden Slipper in the early futures markets just behind Beneteau.

Despite having had just one career race start, Solar Charged impressed many with her sensational five-length debut win at Randwick followed by a victorious barrier trial. If nominated, the Silver Slipper will be her first public run since November.

Another two-year-old looking for Silver Slipper success is the promising Chance Bye. The unbeaten Snitzel filly has made trainer Michael Tubman more than happy winning her only two race starts, the Nursery Stakes (100m) at Randwick followed by the Inglis Classic (1200m) at Rosehill on January 23.

Tubman is quietly confident that she will continue her winning form in the Silver Slipper and further increase her already impressive total prizemoney total of $341 000.

Also by boom sire Snitzel, is two-year-old colt One More Grand. Trainer Neville Layt plans to run the Listed Canonbury Stakes winner in the Silver Slipper Stakes but has no intention of paying up for them in the Golden Slipper, opting instead for the Black Opal Stakes in Canberra.

Nominations for the Silver Slipper Stakes, and all the other great races due to run at the same meeting, will close at 11:00am (NSW time) on Monday 22 February.

Following this the final field of elite acceptances will be declared on Thursday 25 February.
