Bowman Thrilled to Ride Astern in 2016 Silver Slipper

February 16th, 2016

Astern has continued to firm towards favouritism for the 2016 Golden Slipper (1200m) and leading Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman is understandably thrilled to have picked up the ride on the talented colt in Saturday’s Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens.

One of several exciting two-year-old prospects currently in work for John O’Shea and Godolphin Australia, Astern has only appeared on course once competitively but more than stamped himself as a colt to follow when taking out the Surf Meets The Turf 2.y.o Plate (1000m) at Randwick on December 5th.

With Godolphin’s number 1 rider James McDonald in Melbourne on Saturday to partner Exosphere in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m), Bowman was pleased with the class displayed by the son of Medaglia D’oro in work this week and is excited by his prospects of success in the 2016 Silver Slipper.

“It was a bit of an honour to get the opportunity to go out there,” Bowman told Sky Racing HQ.

“I went out there to gallop Astern, who I ride in the Silver Slipper this weekend, and I was very pleased with the feel that he gave me.

“He gave me a good feel like any good horse would.

“He didn’t go out to break any records and haven’t not worked with the horse at all it is hard to get a guide on where he is fitness wise, but I would say he is forward enough to win this weekend and he will take benefit from the outing.

“It would only be natural that John would have him at that type of stage.

“He is a very strong colt and physically he is very forward and mature.”

Bowman does not have a particularly strong affiliation with Godolphin Australia but has experienced plenty of success for trainer John O’Shea prior to his time with the international operation.

“I had a close association with John prior to him going to Godolphin and I rode for them last year in the Golden Slipper,” Bowman said.

“It is certainly an opportunity, I don’t have a top two-year-old just yet, but we are getting to the business end of the season now and I am sure we are going to see a few roll out.

“I am happy to fill in where I can and when I am needed I will do what I can.”

The 2016 Silver Slipper field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
